Academic Degrees

Since the Bologna Process all European Union countries ensure comparability in the standards and quality of higher education qualifications, and Portugal is not an exception. The basic degree of higher education is Baccalaureate or Bachelor’s Degree. It consists of 3 to 4 years of study (6-8 semesters) according to the field of studies or the university. The second degree, or Master’s Degree, is still mandatory in some courses (Medicine and Architecture, for example) where the student must complete at least 10 semesters. The third and most important academic degree is the Doctorate (PhD), that consists of an extra 4-6 semesters and where the student is required to write a final paper (Thesis) and defend it before a Jury.
